What is consciousness? Even though the current mainstream view suggests that the brain is the producer of consciousness in a materialistic and reductionist context, there is ample evidence supporting an alternative model: that the brain acts as a receiver of consciousness instead. This paper discusses evidence from cases where consciousness exists despite a non-working brain, from cases where the brain is nearly absent and from data related to non-local consciousness. All this evidence points towards a different viewpoint than the materialistic one that is currently accepted: The brain acting as a receiver or filter of consciousness. Such a model fits perfectly with all the currently available data and at the same time, solves the problems the current local consciousness model cannot explain. Without claiming to offer a definite solution to the problem, one thing is certain: The evidence calls for a more open mind when viewing the problem of consciousness. I am me. That I know. But where does that stem from? Let’s keep our mind open to everything and we might discover that the world is more exciting than we could ever consider.
