Beyond the "I": A Phenomenological Inquiry into Consciousness, Existence, and Human Self-Distortion
This paper investigates the relationship between consciousness, existence, and the emergence of the self through a phenomenological approach. It argues that human beings ordinarily perceive reality through layers of recognition, memory, language, identity, and social conditioning rather than through direct observation. The concept of the isolated "I" functions as a central structure of separation, creating distinctions between self and world, observer and observed, humanity and universe. By examining consciousness not as a possession of individual organisms but as a manifestation of existence itself, this paper proposes that human beings are expressions of the universe rather than entities standing apart from it. The analysis further explores how social institutions—including religion, nationhood, family structures, economic systems, and cultural traditions—both reveal human capacities and contribute to distortions that limit direct perception. The paper concludes that the fundamental challenge facing humanity is not a lack of technological capability but a lag in conscious understanding of itself.
