The hard problem of consciousness — why and how physical processes give rise to subjective experience — remains one of the most fundamental unsolved problems in science. Existing frameworks including Integrated Information Theory (IIT), Global Workspace Theory (GWT), and Orchestrated Objective Reduction (OrchOR) each address aspects of this problem but fail to provide a complete, parsimonious account of why awareness switches on at all. This paper proposes the Path-Based Cumulative Awareness Hypothesis (PCAH): a model in which every neuron carries an intrinsic observation parameter, and subjective awareness emerges as the cumulative sum of these parameters across active neural firing paths, crossing a threshold value. This model predicts that awareness intensity scales with path length, depth, and activation weight — not with any fixed brain region. Experimental validation via Dynamic Causal Modelling combined with fMRI and simultaneous experience sampling is proposed. The model offers novel explanatory coverage of phenomena including flow states, anesthetic unconsciousness, meditative awareness, and the difference between shallow and deep thought.
