TEACHERS’ PERCEPTION OF GUIDANCE AND COUNSELLING SERVICES FOR BEHAVIOURAL MODIFICATION AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL ADOLESCENTS IN ANAMBRA STATE

The study investigated the teachers’ perception of guidance and counselling services for behavioural modification among secondary school adolescents in Anambra State. The study was guided by two research questions and two hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. Descriptive survey research design was utilized for the study. The population of the study consisted of all the 5,286 teachers in public secondary schools in Anambra State, Nigeria. A sample size of 759 teachers were drawn using proportionate stratified sampling technique. Questionnaire titled “Guidance and Counselling Services for Behavioural Modification Questionnaire (GCSBMQ)” was used for data collection. The instrument was face validated by three experts and subjected to reliability test estimate using Cronbach alpha which yielded 0.88 and 0.81 for Clusters B I and B II. The research questions were answered using mean and standard deviation and the hypotheses were tested using t-test. The findings of the study revealed among others that teachers perceived orientation service to be effective for behavioural modification among secondary school adolescents in Anambra State. It was also found out that there is no significant difference in male and female teachers’ perception of orientation services for behavioural modification among secondary school adolescents in Anambra State. Based on the findings, it was recommended among others that the Post Primary School Service Commission should organize training in counselling-related fields for counsellors who are already practicing in schools to enable them update their knowledge and skills in providing counselling services to modify adolescents’ behaviour.
