The River that returns to its course: On Relapse, Micro-Abdication, and the Two Times of Grace
This essay examines the philosophical structure of relapse through the conceptual framework of the Gaitan Topology. It argues that the persistence of habitual patterns after sincere repentance results from a category distinction between relational status and structural constitution rather than from the failure of grace. Introducing the concept of micro-abdication, the essay interprets relapse as the temporary absence of active consent at a single crossing-point while preserving the continuity of authentic conversion. By relating Aquinas' doctrine of the reliquiae peccati to Romans 7, the miracles of Bethesda and Siloam, and the topology of asymptotic transformation, the essay develops a philosophical account of sanctification as the gradual recarving of character through accumulated contrary acts rather than instantaneous structural replacement.
