Jonathan Birch provides the best and most comprehensive assessment of which entities we ought to think might be sentient. This is a major achievement. However, he is less successful in his aim of developing proposals that are designed to respect our obligations to sentient entities. I argue that we don’t currently know much sentience matters for entities or across entities, and how much it matters relative to other things that also matter morally.
