About Life: A Conceptual Geometry of Identity, Witness, and Inner Direction
This essay proposes the foundational statement of a research programme on life as inner direction under witness-pressure. It does not claim to complete a theory of life. Its central claim is narrower and more workable: a life becomes one's own not by escaping external influence, but by learning to distinguish external pressure from inwardly endorsable direction. The model begins philosophically by introducing the bubble-filter, external witness, inner witness, submission, authentic desire, void, regret, hope, comfort, and direction. It then translates these concepts into geometric language, where identity appears as a region in a space of perspectives and witnesses appear as directional pressures acting on a current state. Finally, it proposes an optimization-inspired formalism that clarifies movement, alignment, path-dependence, regret, momentum, noisy self-knowledge, comfort, and exploration. The mathematical language is not offered as empirical psychology, a psychological measurement instrument, a therapeutic protocol, or an algorithm for authentic living. It is a disciplined formal analogy whose value lies in making relations visible. The wider programme can then develop in two directions: further philosophical research into witness, authenticity, void, hope, and self-ownership, and AI-mediated operationalization and application in agent simulation, interpretability, reflection tools, safeguards, and the study of artificial witnesses.
