Romantic Love as Philosophically Inert: An Immanent Critique of Hegel’s Account of Love
This paper argues that romantic love, within Hegel’s own systematic framework, fails to qualify as a necessary moment in the development of Absolute Spirit. By examining the explicit conditions Hegel articulates for dialectical movement—the struggle for recognition, the fear of death, and sublation—I show that these conditions are not universally instantiated in romantic love. Furthermore, I argue that insofar as romantic love does exhibit recognition-like structures, this is not unique to it: analogous structures arise in relations with employers, religious practice, and other social configurations. The paper concludes that romantic love, on Hegelian grounds, is a contingent event rather than a necessary dialectical moment, and thus yields no philosophical gain within the terms of Hegel’s system.
