The Missing Distinction
The Missing Distinction presents a conceptual architecture for judgments made by bounded evaluators. Its central diagnostic distinguishes structural insufficiency from computational difficulty and specification failure. If a demanded verdict varies within cases the evaluator’s licensed information identifies, then the verdict is not a function of that information. Further recombination, inference, model capacity, or confidence cannot recover the missing distinction. If the target itself is incomplete or contested, the problem instead belongs to specification or governance. The book orders this diagnosis within a larger dependency structure: specification precedes identity; identity makes admissibility and persistence meaningful; retained distinctions bound derivation; informational repair precedes questions of realization; and realization remains separate from authorization, commitment, and verification. A required distinction may be supplied exactly, supplied only with excess revelation, support merely a narrowed demand, or remain unavailable. Sequential realization adds another separation: identical verdicts can emerge from paths that reveal different information, so adequate provenance depends on the declared audit demand. Examples from biology, software, archives, automated judgment, institutions, and scientific disagreement show how the framework reorganizes failures commonly filed under unrelated labels. The book owns no new theorem; it synthesizes and operationalizes the program’s formal results while preserving their declared scopes and boundaries.
