Self-Similarity and the Emergence of Feeling
This paper proposes a structural account of how feeling emerges in organized systems. All living systems maintain boundaries that separate an interior from an exterior while allowing energy and information to pass between them. Through repeated interaction among their components, such systems develop internal structures that persist over time. Incoming signals from the environment interact with these internal structures when they cross the system’s boundary. When the structure of an incoming signal corresponds closely to the internal organization of the system, the signal propagates efficiently through the internal network. This propagation stabilizes activity across the system and allows the system to register the successful interaction between its existing structure and the incoming pattern. The paper argues that this internal registration of structural correspondence is the basis of feeling. Experience occurs when a coherent interior detects evidence that its internal organization matches the structure of signals it processes. The condition that enables this process is coherence, defined as the state in which internal coordination among the system’s components persists faster than disruption imposed by the environment. When this balance holds, internal patterns remain stable long enough for signals to propagate through the system and reveal correspondences between internal and external structure. The mechanism is continuous across biological scales. Simple organisms register basic correspondences between internal regulation and environmental signals, while complex nervous systems detect increasingly abstract similarities between internal models and environmental structure. Within the broader coherence threshold framework, this condition can be expressed as the ratio between the rate of internal coordination and the rate of environmental disturbance. When internal coordination exceeds external disruption, the system maintains a coherent interior capable of registering its own persistence. The subjective side of this process is described as Aleph Harmonic Qualia, the felt resonance that occurs when incoming structure aligns with the organization of a coherent system.
