After Symmetry: Superintelligent AI and the Unfree Preservation of Humanity

Contemporary discussions of superintelligent artificial intelligence are dominated by the question of whether AI will destroy humanity. This essay argues that this framing is incomplete. Between extinction and genuine salvation lies a neglected possibility: humanity may survive biologically while losing its status as a historical and political subject. I call this outcome **unfree preservation**—a condition in which humans remain alive, prosperous, and protected, yet cease to participate in determining their collective future. The paper shifts the debate from AI safety and control to the political philosophy of post-symmetric orders, asking not only whether humanity survives, but in what political status it is preserved. It distinguishes four meanings of agency, develops the concept of post-symmetric governance, and proposes a typology of nine regimes of human preservation, ranging from the museum of humanity and the zoo to client civilization, protectorate, co-opted elites, priesthood of interpreters, local agency, digital diaspora, and constitutional cooperation. Unlike existing taxonomies, the proposed framework classifies futures not by mechanisms of AI takeover or survival, but by the degree to which human agency is retained. To compare these regimes, the paper adapts Rost’s six dimensions of governance—legitimacy, accountability, corrigibility, non-domination, subsidiarity, and institutional resilience—as a comparative matrix for post-symmetric political orders. The central claim is that the decisive question of the AI age is not simply whether humans remain alive, but whether they remain subjects capable of participating in the future rather than objects of benevolent optimization.
