The Hinge of Time: Entropy, Causal Symmetry, and the Emergence of Free Light

The early universe begins in a state of extreme symmetry, offering no internal basis for temporal orientation. Yet by the time the universe becomes transparent at recombination, entropy is increasing, structure is emerging, and the arrow of time is already active. This paper argues that these features cannot originate within the observable manifold. A symmetric plasma cannot generate direction, and no hidden asymmetry is compatible with the uniformity of early‑universe observations. The arrow must therefore arise from a minimum‑entropy boundary condition that precedes visibility. I call this boundary the hinge: the structural origin of the temporal manifold, the point at which symmetry becomes capable of orientation, and the condition that sets entropy on a rising trajectory long before light is free to reveal it. The hinge is interpreted through a minimal operator with three irreducible modes—generation, boundary, and revelation—each necessary for a universe that can exist, evolve, and become intelligible. Recombination is the first observational expression of this structure, not its origin. The result is a unified account of temporal direction that avoids fine‑tuning, preserves early‑universe symmetry, and identifies the structural conditions required for a coherent, intelligible cosmos. The hinge framework therefore has implications for cosmology, the metaphysics of time, and the minimal architecture of any universe capable of disclosing its own order.
