A Critique of Faith’s Epistemic Pretensions This paper argues that a broad swath of faith-literature decouples belief from evidence, violating the maxim that rational belief is a degree of belief that maps to the degree of the relevant evidence. Using Olli-Pekka Vainio (2017) as a central exemplar and situating it alongside Plantinga (2000), Swinburne (2005), Alston (1991), Wolterstorff (1976), Plantinga and Wolterstorff (1983), Moser (2008), Bishop (2007), Buchak (2012), Audi (2011), Roberts and Wood (2007), Clark (1990), Newman (1870), Hick (1957), and apologetic syntheses such as Craig (2008), the paper identifies seven recurring blunders: presuppositional starting-points, equivocation about certainty, immunization against falsification, rhetorical partitioning of doubt, reliance on authority and tradition, neglect of evidential asymmetry, and pragmatic relabeling as epistemology. These strategies constitute epistemic immunization: preserving belief despite counterevidence via definitional flexibility and asymmetry. As a corrective, a Bayesian framework is offered that explicitly maintains the evidence-to-belief mapping. The conclusion suggests that while faith may serve pragmatic or communal ends, such value is extra-epistemic.
