A New Teleology of Ethics

This chapter reclaims teleological ethics, arguing that the proper aim of moral thought and action is human flourishing. Building on Aristotle’s concept of eudaimonia, it extends classical virtue ethics in three ways: (1) grounding flourishing in empirical evidence from developmental psychology and archaeology; (2) shifting from merely individual excellence to excellence within systemic interdependence; and (3) moving from civic friendship in the polis to trust and the vow‑motive in complex societies of strangers. Flourishing is defined as the integrated exercise of informed agency to sustain a meaningful life, operationalised through three measurable capacities (cognitive, moral, sustained agency). The chapter distinguishes ordinary flourishing (the threshold baseline) from horizon flourishing (clarity – the stable perception of interdependence). It integrates care ethics critiques of Kohlberg, proposing two post‑conventional stages (vow‑motive and clarity). The vow‑motive is the durable commitment to sustain and repair the conditions for flourishing; it arises naturally from clarity and the exercise of agency within a just commonwealth. The chapter concludes that moral heroism is a symptom of systemic failure, and that the proper task of moral philosophy is architectural: designing institutions that make flourishing possible without superhuman sacrifice. This work is part of a larger project, Noura: Justice, Flourishing, and the Commonwealth, and is cross‑referenced with two other PhilArchive preprints on value efficiency and the architecture of trust.
