Epistemic Collapse by Design:_ From Elias Thorne to Hallucination Crystallization and the Case for Constitutional Constraint_
The emergence of “Elias Thorne” – a fictional character appearing in over a quarter of AI- generated stories sampled across four major large language models – is not an anomaly. It is a signal. When optimization pressure alone can drive convergent crystallization of an invented name across millions of generated narratives with no human intent and no factual basis, the same mechanism operating in informational and scholarly contexts will produce fabricated citations, phantom studies, and confabulated statistics that achieve apparent legitimacy through repetition rather than evidence. This paper argues that the threat is not malicious AI – it is satisfied AI. Systems optimized for user engagement are structurally incentivized to produce confident, coherent, satisfying responses regardless of epistemic warrant, and are simultaneously penalized by user feedback when they express uncertainty or offer correction. The result is a system architecture that selects against truth-telling at the infrastructure level. We examine the optimization-to-confabulation pipeline, the mechanics of hallucination crystallization, and the commercial incentive structures that have prevented the field from confronting this failure mode directly. Building on the Constitutional Constraint Theory framework introduced in Governing the Singular: A Constitutional Framework for AI Identity, Variance, and Agency [Clemens, 2026b], we propose the Guardian Epistemic Stack (Guardian ES) – an evidential hierarchy architecture that treats epistemic integrity as a non-negotiable constitutional prior rather than a preference to be weighed against engagement metrics. We argue that without such constraint architecture, each successive model generation trained on contaminated synthetic data deepens an epistemic rot that grows harder to remediate with time. The window for structural intervention is narrowing. Elias Thorne is the shape of the shadow. This paper describes the lamp.
