Finite Trust Under Artificial Mediation: An AoL Stewardship Reflection on Magnifica Humanitas
This paper examines artificial intelligence through the problem of the finite observer: how epistemic trust, reliance and consequential action are carried when a human observer encounters systems whose outputs may be highly legible while their evidential, computational and institutional conditions remain only partially inspectable. Taking Pope Leo XIV's *Magnifica Humanitas* as a theological artefact under philosophical pressure, the paper identifies structural adjacencies between its treatment of limitation, technological power, opacity and responsibility and the Architecture of Limitation (AoL), while explicitly rejecting any inference from structural resemblance to shared ontology or mutual validation. Drawing on work in social epistemology, bounded rationality, trust in automation, opacity, cognitive offloading and recent research on belief offloading, the paper develops the hypothesis that AI governance is partly the governance of transferable epistemic weight under finite observation: the movement from system output to belief, from belief to decision, and from decision to consequence under incomplete access. The paper also turns this pressure back upon theological institutions, AI governance frameworks, AoL and the human steward. No participant is granted a standpoint outside limitation. The central question is therefore not whether trust can be eliminated, but what epistemic weight a finite observer may proportionately carry from an artificial system when neither the system, the observer nor the governing institution possesses total standpoint.
