The Event Horizon as a Structural Phase Boundary in Intelligence
Discussions of advanced intelligence often locate qualitative cognitive transitions in consciousness or subjective experience. This paper argues that such accounts misidentify the relevant boundary. The true event horizon in intelligence is not phenomenological but structural: a phase boundary in cognitive organization that separates systems governed by reversible, exploratory dynamics from systems regulated by temporally stabilized, integrated abstraction. Below this horizon, cognition operates through relevance optimization, heuristic selection, and horizontal exploration within an existing solution space. Above it, integrated abstract structures acquire regulatory dominance, progressively constraining which distinctions remain dynamically viable. This transition constitutes a phase change rather than a continuous scaling of capacity. Importantly, irreversibility at the horizon does not imply the elimination of prior cognitive modes, but a loss of symmetry at the level of global regulation: earlier modes may remain available, yet no longer function as the system’s default organizing regime. By framing the event horizon as a structural boundary rather than a marker of consciousness, the paper provides a disciplined account of qualitative change applicable to both human and artificial cognition, while avoiding anthropomorphic and phenomenological assumptions.
