The Free Hand as an External Memory Driver and Cognitive Coevolution Factor: A Materialist Model of Anthropogenesis
English Abstract This paper presents a materialist account of anthropogenesis in which the functional release of the forelimbs associated with habitual bipedalism is identified as a foundational driver of cognitive evolution. The permanently free hand enabled systematic carrying, retention, and accumulation of artifacts, allowing tools to function as stable external repositories of operational knowledge rather than merely episodic instruments. This process initiated a gene–culture coevolutionary loop in which the material environment itself became a selective pressure shaping cognitive and communicative capacities. The model is consistent with extended cognition and material engagement theories, while foregrounding a specific morphological condition that is often underemphasized: the sustained functional freedom of the hand. The free hand is thus conceptualized as a critical, though not solitary, factor in the coevolution of material culture, social organization, and human cognition.
