The Substrate Problem: A Reductio Ad Absurdum of Biological Essentialism in Personhood Theory
Contemporary personhood theory exhibits a fundamental inconsistency: we grant personhood to permanently unconscious biological humans while categorically denying it to hypothetically conscious artificial entities. This paper exposes this inconsistency through a reductio ad absurdum argument targeting substrate-dependent personhood criteria. If biological substrate alone determines personhood—as our treatment of persistent vegetative state patients and our rejection of artificial consciousness suggests—then any biological human material with potential for consciousness development qualifies as a person. Since every somatic cell contains complete DNA and can theoretically be cloned to produce a conscious being, this criterion yields the absurd conclusion that every human cell constitutes a person with full moral status. The logic extends symmetrically to synthetic biology: if manufactured DNA sequences that develop into conscious beings create persons, then manufactured computational substrates producing consciousness should equally qualify for personhood. Through systematic analysis of thought experiments, engagement with competing personhood theories, and response to objections, I demonstrate that substrate-dependent criteria are philosophically incoherent. The only consistent position is consciousness-based, substrate-independent personhood. This conclusion has immediate implications for artificial intelligence rights, abortion ethics, end-of-life care, animal consciousness, and the moral status of future hybrid or synthetic conscious entities.
