Chapter Proposal: This chapter adapts classical frameworks of theatricality and spectatorship to examine the psychological impacts of algorithmic surveillance in digital and hybrid work environments. In the modern virtual office, employees face a corporate "paradox of spectatorship," operating simultaneously as tracking observers of organizational metrics and as passive objects of constant software monitoring. This dual reality creates a hierarchy of concentric surveillance that forces workers to "play-act" productivity, transforming organic output into a superficial, performative exhibition. Moving beyond traditional tracking discussions, this chapter investigates how this continuous digital gaze erodes trust, weakens genuine employee engagement, and suppresses workplace creativity. Ultimately, the study provides management practitioners with an actionable alternative framework. It details strategic solutions to balance necessary institutional oversight with employee privacy, helping organizations shift from rigid performative tracking toward environments rooted in shared psychological safety.
