Note on How to Read My Texts
This paper examines how activity becomes stabilized under conditions of limited cognitive and coordinative capacity. It argues that relations requiring sustained processing are systematically displaced into externally stabilized forms—tools, symbols, institutions—that reduce the effort required for their reproduction and coordination. From this perspective, economic and social processes can be understood as configurations of redistributed effort, where the distinction between effort and labour becomes unstable. Activities involving substantial expenditure may contribute little to material reproduction, while structurally indispensable processes may require minimal visible effort. The analysis proceeds across different levels: from compressed forms in language and institutional practice to more explicit accounts of economic coordination, and further to a minimal framework in which representational assumptions are suspended. At this limit, activity is described in terms of irreversible modifications under signal influence and constraints on possible continuations. These levels are not independent. Concrete analyses can be read as approaching minimal conditions from within established conceptual schemes, while the minimal framework operates in the opposite direction, stripping these schemes to their operational limits. Within this framework, categories central to many economic and political theories—such as property, fairness, and exploitation—do not function as primary explanatory terms. The problem is not the choice between alternative systems, but the absence of a framework capable of describing their common conditions, modes of coordination, and limits.
