Divine Inscription and Measured Creation: The Qur’anic Vision of Reality
This paper develops a philosophical-analytical framework that interprets Qur’anic cosmology through the lens of contemporary physics, particularly relativity, quantum theory, and information-based models of the universe. Drawing upon Khorwat’s Al-Qur’ān al-Karīm: ʿIlm li-Kull al-Ḥaqāʾiq (2023), the study reexamines the Qur’anic concepts of kitāb (cosmic inscription), qadar (quantitative determination), and umm al-kitāb (the metaphysical source of actualization) as epistemic keys to understanding the structure of reality. The Qur’an, this paper argues, anticipates the modern scientific view that the universe is a mathematically ordered system of information. The concept of kitāb corresponds to the total inscription of physical law, qadar to the precise measurement and quantification governing all entities, and umm al-kitāb to the informational matrix from which the material cosmos emerges—analogous to the quantum field of potentialities. By integrating Qur’anic hermeneutics, linguistic analysis (from Lisān al-ʿArab), and physical theory, the paper constructs a rigorous metaphysical model wherein divine inscription accounts for the unity of deterministic law (as seen in relativity) and contingent actualization (as seen in quantum mechanics). Special attention is devoted to reinterpreting the verse “God effaces what He wills and confirms what He wills; and with Him is the Mother of the Book” (Q 13:39) as a metaphysical principle describing the passage from informational possibility to physical actuality. Ultimately, the study proposes that the Qur’an articulates a philosophy of science that transcends empirical description: an ontology of quantitative creation that situates the laws of physics within divine intentionality. The paper thus offers a renewed philosophical interpretation of iʿjāz ʿilmī (scientific inimitability), demonstrating that the Qur’anic discourse on measure, inscription, and temporality anticipates the informational and relativistic foundations of modern cosmology.
