The Education of Liberty: John Stuart Mill, Individuality, and the Moral Purpose of Learning

Education is often justified through economic mobility, civic cohesion, or individual self-development. Each aim is important, but none adequately captures the connection between education and liberty. This paper reconstructs John Stuart Mill’s account of individuality to argue that the moral purpose of liberal-democratic education is the development of judgmental agency: the socially supported capacity to encounter alternatives, assess reasons and evidence, form and revise commitments, dissent from authority, and participate in common institutions without surrendering authorship of one's life. Judgmental agency is neither value neutrality nor the transmission of a single ideal of success. It requires curricular plurality, epistemic discipline, opportunities for consequential voice, protection against humiliation, and fair access to the material and temporal conditions of learning. Drawing on Mill, Dewey, Gutmann, Callan, Nussbaum, Freire, hooks, Anderson, and Biesta, the paper distinguishes education for employability, education for democratic membership, and education for self-authorship. These purposes can reinforce one another but should not be collapsed. A six-part civic-liberal education test is proposed to evaluate whether educational institutions expand students' powers of inquiry, interpretation, experimentation, association, contestation, and revision. The argument addresses objections concerning neutrality, indoctrination, parental authority, labor-market relevance, and assessment. It concludes that education serves liberty not by insulating students from influence, which is impossible, but by making influence visible, answerable, and open to revision.
