In contemporary China, the term “world-class university” has become the symbol of national will and collective ambition. Universities such as Tsinghua, Peking University, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences take pride in rankings, metrics, and global recognition, yet beneath this pyramid built in the name of “science” lies a deep void—the barrenness of thought and the slumber of spirit. Chinese universities thrive materially but languish intellectually. We can build the most advanced laboratories, yet fail to create free minds; We can replicate cutting-edge technology, yet cannot give birth to an original soul. “World-class,” too often, is a ritual of imitation—a worship of rankings masquerading as faith.
