The Loss of the University's Dao
This paper uses the Lao-Yang Genesis Cosmology (LYGC) as its analytical framework to offer a systematic scientific-philosophical critique of the educational discourse of Wang Shuguo, former president of Xi'an Jiaotong University and current president of Fuyao University of Science and Technology. Relative to the initial draft, this final edition strengthens the methodology in three ways. First, it grounds its reading in Wang's own public statements—in commencement addresses, anniversary speeches, and interviews with several media outlets—rather than in impressionistic paraphrase, with footnoted sources in the text. Second, it explicitly acknowledges and incorporates a self-correcting element previously overlooked—Wang himself publicly opposes paper-counting and ranking-dependence—and accordingly narrows the target of critique from “whether external metrics are used” to the deeper categorical question of “whether the authority to adjudicate value lies outside the substance of learning.” Third, it explicitly positions the Sage Entropy equation and the Three-Level Greedy Positive-Feedback Model (3L-GFM) as a normative-conceptual framework rather than empirically testable scientific laws, and adds a section on “why LYGC” to state its methodological standing. This edition further adds a dedicated chapter arguing that the goal Wang has set for Fuyao—“benchmarking Stanford”—is likewise a directional error. Drawing on the Western tradition of university critique (Maxwell, Readings, Nussbaum, Collini) and on Stanford's own alienation within the capital environment of Silicon Valley (the unbounded expansion of the Desire Amplification Factor, DAF; the systemic decay of the Cosmic Constraint Function, CCF; epistemic mimicry; the entropy lock), it argues that “benchmarking Stanford” amounts to running faster in the wrong direction—because the justification Wang offers for it, “conforming to the laws and needs of the times,” shares the very same coordinate system as his earlier discourse; the origin of the coordinate system never moves. The paper closes with six paths for rebuilding the university's Dao, whose overall direction can be summarized as: not From Stanford but From Dao; not Knowledge First but Wisdom First.
