Built To Forget - The Importance of Consent Infrastructure For The Post-Keyboard Era
What happens when voice becomes the primary interface layer rather than an accessibility accommodation? Following the methodology IDEO made famous — build the thing, watch how it behaves, let the research emerge from use — a messaging prototype was developed and deployed. What emerged is a thesis about consent infrastructure. The phonetic alphabet gave humanity "an eye for an ear." The keyboard gave it a finger for a tongue. As voice-first interfaces become the dominant interaction paradigm, the infrastructure required to collect, store, and govern voice data at scale does not yet exist. This paper argues that utility-scale AI infrastructure is structurally incapable of retrofitting consent-native data collection, that the resulting gap creates both a policy emergency and a market opportunity, and that Canada's cultural sector — with fifty years of institutional experience in rights management, creator compensation, and consent-based governance — represents the natural substrate for building the alternative. The framework proposes consent architecture as a function of design technology rather than regulatory compliance, with implications for voice biomarker diagnostics, longitudinal data collection, and the emerging agent-native metadata layer.
