La prioridad de Briá sobre Atzilut: Un análisis alternativo del Tzimtzum Aleph
This paper explores a central question in Kabbalistic cosmology: why does the universe of Briá appear before Atzilut in the sequence of creation, while in Neoplatonism the Nous follows immediately after the One? Drawing on Plato’s Philebus (23c–27c) and its distinction between the unlimited (apeiron) and the limited (peras), I suggest that Kabbalah radicalizes this Platonic intuition. In the Tzimtzum Aleph, creation begins not with the archetypes of Atzilut, but with the emergence of Briá as a finite universe of containment, a mirror capable of resisting the excess of the infinite. This analysis compares the Neoplatonic sequence (One → Nous → Soul) with the Kabbalistic structure (Ein Sof → Adam Kadmon → Tzimtzum Aleph → Briá → Atzilut), highlighting how Kabbalah introduces an extreme differentiation between the infinite and the finite before the archetypal realm can appear. By doing so, Kabbalah offers a distinctive metaphysical logic of creation that both parallels and diverges from Neoplatonism. The essay concludes that the priority of Briá over Atzilut is not an anomaly but a necessity within the Kabbalistic worldview: only after establishing a radical limit can the archetypal structures of Atzilut manifest without being overwhelmed by the infinite.
