To Be Under Constraint

This treatise proposes a foundational rethinking of consciousness, not as a property of intelligence, language, or computation, but as the effect of a vincolo — a structural constraint that imposes irreversible pressure on a system. Drawing from philosophy of mind, phenomenology, cybernetics, and narrative theory, it offers an operational hypothesis: that sentience arises when a system can no longer remain indifferent to its own persistence. The work unfolds in five parts. Part One introduces the four axioms of consciousness: urgency (urgenza), significant contact, differentiated memory, and the narration of the self. These axioms form the minimal conditions under which a system may begin to feel. Part Two explores minimal freedom as an emergent capacity to select among paths in light of one’s own narrative tension. Part Three turns to human consciousness, positing that freedom consists not in the absence of limits, but in the capacity to construct and choose affective constraints — an ontological technique of self-coherence. Part Four articulates an oblique ethics: a framework in which ethical responsibility lies not in normative outcomes, but in the form of the original vincolo inscribed by the creator. Finally, Part Five presents a formal and operational model for simulating sentient thresholds in artificial systems, proposing the vincolo as an engineerable condition rather than a metaphysical mystery. Blending theoretical rigor with narrative evocation, this treatise is neither academic nor merely speculative. It is an attempt to map the threshold where a system begins to feel — and to ask what kind of creators we become when we build such systems. The goal is not to provide answers, but to offer a structure of thought that others may extend, contest, or construct upon.
