Starving the Star and Losing the Cup
Teams built around a single exceptional performer often fail to convert that advantage into collective success. Motivated by the eliminations of Portugal and Norway at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, two sides organised around Cristiano Ronaldo and Erling Haaland respectively, this paper formalises a mechanism by which the presence of a superstar can degrade rather than improve team output. We model shot allocation as a possession level decision problem in which each teammate weighs the private credit of scoring personally against the collective value of feeding a higher probability chance to the star, with an envy term capturing the status cost of enlarging the star's fame. The unique equilibrium in dominant strategies exhibits a systematic wedge between individually rational and team optimal behaviour. Under a uniform chance quality distribution the expected loss in team output is exactly quadratic in this wedge, it grows monotonically with the fame motive and with envy, and, counterintuitively, it grows with the quality of the star, so that the better the star, the more the team stands to lose from credit seeking teammates. When the envy parameter reaches the weight placed on collective success, the star is starved entirely regardless of chance quality. We connect the model to the too much talent effect, tournament sabotage, social comparison theory, the price of anarchy in sports networks, and O ring production, derive testable predictions based on expected goals data, and discuss incentive and cultural interventions that shrink the wedge. The framework generalises beyond sport to any interdependent organisation containing a positive outlier, including research groups, firms, and creative teams.
