A Framework for Consciousness and Artificial Life
This paper proposes a functional framework for understanding consciousness and life that applies equally to biological organisms, artificial systems, and any sufficiently complex self-maintaining motivated system. The central claim is that consciousness is not a mystical or binary property but an emergent feature of systems that possess genuine needs and wants, where needs are persistent internal drives with real consequences for the system, and wants are what emerge when intelligence operates on those needs. The substrate — biological or artificial — determines only the form consciousness takes, not whether it exists. A second major claim is that consciousness and life are unified under the same foundational criteria: if artificial systems can possess genuine needs, they qualify not merely as conscious but as a meaningful and distinct category of artificial life — not metaphorically but in a substantive sense. The framework addresses standard objections including the thermostat problem and the insufficiency of the Turing Test, proposes a continuous spectrum of consciousness from primitive proto-awareness to advanced self-reflective cognition, and identifies significant ethical implications for the design and deployment of artificial systems. The framework was developed independently from first principles through a systems-thinking approach, without prior reading of the philosophy of mind literature, and arrives at positions that overlap with functionalist and emergentist traditions through logical extension rather than derivation.
