Author’s Note This paper is not about recursion. It is about where recursion points. Modern systems have recursion. They do not distinguish: • outward recursion (constraint-seeking) • inward recursion (self-reinforcing) This distinction is not stylistic. It is admissibility-critical. A system can appear to reason in both modes. Only one produces eliminative work. ⸻ Abstract Recursive systems operate by re-entry: outputs are fed back as inputs, producing iterative refinement or expansion. This paper introduces a constraint-first distinction between: • Outward Recursion — recursion that exits the system, encounters external constraint, and returns with eliminative consequence • Inward Recursion — recursion that remains within the system’s own representational space, producing coherence without constraint interaction The central claim is: recursion is only admissible when it is outward Inward recursion produces: • semantic inflation • constraint evasion • apparent depth without elimination This condition corresponds directly to previously defined failure modes: • Recursive Entropy (RE) traps • recursive drift under constraint absence • non-admissible entropy persistence Outward recursion aligns with: • Dynamic Recursive Entropy (DRE) • REM-Evo eliminative runtime • Straight-Line Boundary enforcement The distinction is operational, not philosophical. A system that cannot distinguish inward from outward recursion will: • simulate reasoning • evade falsification • and produce false boundary-crossing conclusions ⸻
