Phenomenology, Information, and the Convergence of Ontic and Epistemic Domains
This paper proposes a phenomenological framework in which consciousness functions as the domain of convergence between ontic reality (what exists) and epistemic structure (what is known). Contemporary approaches often treat ontology and epistemology as separable, leaving the role of lived experience under-theorized. Drawing on the philosophy of information, the paper argues that information comprises not only physical representations, but also abstract meaning and interpretive rules, which are not themselves governed by physical law. While physical representations are subject to causal and spatiotemporal constraints, meaning is realized only within experience. To articulate this relationship, the paper develops a triadic model distinguishing ontic, epistemic, and phenomenological domains. Within this model, phenomenological consciousness is not treated as an ontologically independent substance or a product of physical processes alone, but as the experiential field in which physical reality and abstract meaning are unified as lived understanding. Neural activity is interpreted as mediating, rather than ontologically producing, conscious experience. The framework does not posit non-physical causation or violations of established physical laws. Instead, it offers a conceptually conservative account that preserves physical realism while providing a non-reductive understanding of information, meaning, and consciousness. The model also offers a coherent context for interpreting non-ordinary experiences without treating them as decisive empirical evidence. The result is an integrative philosophical account that clarifies the role of phenomenology in foundational inquiry into consciousness and information.
