The Self-Learning Chinese Room: Why Machine Learning Does Not Generate Understanding
This paper extends Searle’s Chinese Room argument to modern self-learning AI systems, demonstrating that machine learning does not overcome the fundamental syntax-semantics distinction but merely shifts it one level deeper. Even systems developing their own symbol manipulation rules through training remain fundamentally syntactic processors without semantic understanding. The analysis develops the "self-learning Chinese Room" thought experiment with two connected chambers: a learning chamber extracting statistical patterns from data, and an execution chamber mechanically applying learned rules. This framework reveals that learning itself operates purely syntactically, optimizing statistical correlations without accessing semantic meaning. Three key findings emerge: (1) Learning capacity does not bridge the gap between statistical correlation and semantic comprehension. (2) Empirical analysis reveals systematic self-referential limitations in contemporary LLMs, pointing to fundamental architectural constraints rather than technical problems. (3) The path from current LLMs to AGI represents not merely a technical scaling challenge, but a fundamental theoretical impossibility. This analysis demonstrates that no amount of parameter scaling can bridge the syntaxsemantics gap inherent in these systems. Just as increasingly sophisticated abacus operations cannot yield arithmetic understanding, no scaling of transformer architectures can produce semantic comprehension. LLMs manipulate linguistic patterns without understanding—an inherent limitation of statistical pattern matching without world-grounding.
