The Unclosable Bridge_ Why Bounded Rational Methods Cannot Derive Ontological Finality
This paper argues that no bounded rational method can derive ontological finality from within its own admissibility conditions alone. Bounded methods operate under conditions of access, representation, inference, and validation that they do not themselves justify as identical with reality’s final constitution. Within those conditions, such methods can derive structural necessity and establish varying degrees of instantiation, but they cannot close the final step from regime-relative success to ontology. The paper distinguishes three levels that are routinely conflated: structural necessity, instantiation, and ontological finality. It then states the derivation barrier: a method can derive what follows from its own admissibility conditions, but cannot, by that same derivation alone, prove that those conditions are reality’s deepest structure. This applies to both structural and empirical inquiry, though the two differ in proximity to instantiation. Structural work determines what must hold within a regime; empirical work shows that real systems satisfy structures within regimes of measurement. Neither closes ontology. The paper also explains why sufficiently forced theories can feel ontological from inside the reasoning process that derives them. Compression, cross-domain alignment, intelligibility capture, and elimination of alternatives generate what the paper calls ontological pull. This effect is lawful and epistemically informative, but not sufficient for ontological commitment. Where the bridge cannot close, human cognition fills the gap with placeholder commitments such as materialism, Platonism, theology, and multiverse realism. These may be useful commitments, but they are not derivations compelled by the underlying method. The concluding claim is practical: bounded rational systems may act from, commit to, and build upon structures sufficient for trust, recurrence, and perturbation-stable performance within a regime without requiring ontological finality.
