The Hold: Maintaining the Real in the face of what escapes
An opening can appear and fall right back shut. This essay names the operation that maintains it over time without freezing it and without dissolving the one who holds it: the hold. Holding is not conserving a form; it is keeping an opening from dying. Its three conditions are a presence, a non-grasp, and a non-dissolution, and its main counterfeit is sacrifice, the total presence that erases its own subject. The essay adds the complementary concept the hold requires, the clean withdrawal, and follows the operation to its limit: holding in the face of the irreversible, which is one definition of love.
