philosophy
Home is a short lyric-philosophical meditation that treats belonging as a property of relation rather than location. Beginning with a bird that names three homes at once — nest, tree, park — it argues that home is the center of a circle, and that for a person the circles only widen: face, kitchen, street, city, country, the pale blue dot. Drawing on the older sense of dwelling as being woven into a place, the essay reframes the human reach outward — the climb toward the largest ring, the farthest galaxy — as a misread of an inward homesickness: a longing for a country never seen. It closes by returning the figure of the center to where it began: the bird does not fly off to find its home; it holds the center of every circle and carries it. The piece is standalone prose, kindred in voice and design to the On ——ing essays, and extends a question first posed in On Rising.
