This chapter distinguishes three types of causation: causal structure, causal difference-making and causal production. It looks at theories of each of these three types of causation: how does each type of causation relate to counterfactuals, and to chances, and to regularities? It also questions the use of intuitions in theorizing about causation, and it raises the issue of monism versus pluralism about causation in the social sciences.
