When Tools Look Human: The Mediation-Confusion Cycle from Mirrors to Artificial Intelligencerepresentational media, and AI consciousness confusion
This paper introduces the Mediation-Confusion Cycle as a conceptual-historical framework for understanding why societies repeatedly mistake mediated technological signals for human-like being. It argues that new representational technologies disturb inherited boundaries between reflection and identity, voice and presence, image and reality, broadcast and truth, and interaction and consciousness. Through examples including writing, mirrors, photography, telephone, cinema, radio, television, digital media, and artificial intelligence, the paper shows how technological media are often ontologically inflated beyond what their mechanisms justify. Artificial intelligence intensifies this pattern because it is not merely representational: it is generative, interactive, classificatory, predictive, and increasingly embedded in institutional decision-making. The paper therefore argues that AI consciousness claims require epistemic boundary integrity: a disciplined distinction between metaphor, analogy, mechanism, and evidence. The central claim is that meaningful human-AI interaction does not by itself prove machine consciousness, and that AI risk should be understood not only as a fear of conscious machines, but as a problem of governance without consciousness.
