Artificial Intelligence and the Nature of Consciousness: Reflections Inspired by Sir Roger Penrose and Robert Kuhn’s “Landscape of Consciousness”
As artificial intelligence continues to evolve at lightning speed, one question keeps coming up: Can machines ever truly be conscious? It's a question that’s as old as philosophy itself, but it feels more urgent than ever today. This report explores six major ideologies that try to answer that question: Idealism, Materialism, Panpsychism, Dualism, Quantum perspectives, and Monism. All of these offers a unique way of thinking about the mind, the self, and how or if consciousness can emerge in something that isn’t human. We looked at what leading thinkers in each camp have said, and we also shared our own opinions and leanings, often finding ourselves somewhere between agreement, doubt, and curiosity. We place particular emphasis on Penrose’s Orch OR theory-a controversial yet innovative framework uniting quantum biology and neuroscience-discussing its implications for bridging subjective experience with fundamental physics, its speculative challenges to classical materialism, and its role in redefining how consciousness might emerge from non-classical processes. Along the way, we also dove into Thomas Kuhn’s "The Landscape of Consciousness", using his ideas on paradigm shifts to frame the bigger picture, how our understanding of consciousness changes over time, not just because of new discoveries but because of how we choose to interpret them. This project isn’t about finding one right answer. It’s about asking better questions and thinking deeply about what AI means not just for the future of technology but for our understanding of ourselves.
