Gyeolchok: Ethics of Responsibility and Temporal Delay
This introduces Gyeolchok, a novel ethical schema that captures the temporal dynamics of missed address, remainder, delay, and response in human and institutional interactions. Building on Levinas’s notion of the transcendent call, Merleau-Ponty’s fleshly entanglement, Husserl’s anticipatory horizon, Lacan’s Real as remainder, Derrida’s trace of différance, and Deleuze’s difference-producing repetition, Gyeolchok reframes ethical uptake as a diachronic process rather than an instantaneous event. Concretely, a transcendent call (C) often fails to align with “my now” (F) and leaves a non-captured remainder (r) that resonates at the embodied interface (S). If that remainder is held within a publicly bounded interval of responsibility (Δt), it is transduced into an asymmetric response (R) that exceeds mere exchange. Two guiding principles underpin this schema: (1) Missed uptake (F) is a necessary ethical condition, not a defect; (2) Delay (Δt) is a period of mandated responsibility, not simple deferral. By treating the belatedness of ethical recognition as the very ground of moral possibility, Gyeolchok illuminates how institutions and individuals can structure announcements, listening periods, and concrete remedies. It offers a heuristic for education, clinical practice, AI ethics, and policy design that honors both the exigency of the Other’s demand and the situated temporality of responsible action. ________________________________________ ※ The concept of Gyulchok was first coined by Hajin Lim in 2025 and is currently under preparation for publication as a scholarly article and future monograph.
