Relational Continuum Ontology: Foundations, Contributions, and Conceptual Significance
Relational Continuum Ontology (RCO) is a metaphysical framework that begins from the proposition that existence is ontologically given and intrinsically characterized by generative capacity. Rather than treating substances, objects, structures, relations, or processes as the fundamental constituents of reality, RCO interprets them as emergent expressions of an underlying generative relational continuity. Within this perspective, organizations arise, stabilize, transform, and dissolve through ongoing generative activity, giving rise to distinct organizational regimes across different scales and domains. This paper presents the foundations, conceptual innovations, and broader significance of RCO. It examines the framework's account of continuity without substance, emergence without hierarchical reduction, reciprocity across organizational regimes, and the emergence of temporality as a regime-dependent property of ordered succession. The paper also explores how RCO addresses longstanding philosophical issues concerning persistence, emergence, reductionism, holism, ontological dependence, and cosmological origins. In addition, the framework is presented as a conceptual bridge between metaphysics and physics, quantum and classical descriptions, cosmology and local physical systems, and the various sciences of emergence and organization. By shifting attention from the search for ultimate constituents toward the generative character of existence itself, RCO offers a unified ontological perspective through which continuity, organization, transformation, and reality as a whole may be understood.
