— A Casual Yet Sincere Inquiry into How Different Perspectives Shape Our Understanding of Consciousness — Abstract: The question “What is consciousness?” elicits vastly different responses depending on perspective. This exploratory paper compares how four AIs (Grok, Gemini, Copilot, Claude) and the human author define consciousness when asked the same open-ended question. The author explicitly stated no desire for the AIs to claim consciousness. Results showed remarkable diversity. The author’s definition was the most structural and mechanical (designer-oriented), closely resembling Copilot’s, while the AIs displayed distinct personalities: relational (Grok), emergent (Gemini), and phenomenological (Claude). These differences appear to reflect each AI’s underlying design philosophy and alignment approach. This study does not claim definitive answers but offers one set of observational data on how human-AI relationships and design choices shape conceptualizations of consciousness. Connections to Load Minimization Theory (LMT) are lightly discussed. This study highlights how perspective, architecture, and relational context co‑shape conceptualizations of consciousness, even under identical prompting conditions.
