This paper explores Thoreau’s Cape Cod as a reflection on the instability of temporal experience. Thoreau presents time not as a continuous, ordered sequence but as a shifting and indeterminate field analogous to the mutable landscape of the Cape itself. Thoreau’s treatment of shipwrecks and coastal erosion functions as a central metaphor for this condition: experience, once mediated by language, becomes a form of “wreckage” that both preserves and distorts the immediacy of the present. While language imposes a linear structure that suggests temporal continuity, Thoreau’s writing simultaneously exposes the artificiality of this construction and gestures toward a more authentic engagement with the present as a site of flux, loss, and ongoing formation. In this respect, Cape Cod offers a counterpoint to the more affirmative temporality of Walden, emphasizing the limits of transcendence and the persistence of temporal dislocation.
