FSC Architecture and the Two Origins of Hierarchy
The Founder–Supporter–Critic (FSC) triadic architecture is a universal control motif present at the earliest emergence of autonomous biological agency and elaborated through evolutionary and developmental time into the full cognitive hierarchies of complex organisms. This paper unifies two previously separate theoretical contributions into a single account. The first, developed in FSC in Biological Systems (Version 2.0), establishes that FSC is a biological universal present from bacterial chemotaxis through mammalian cognition, that the Supporter emerges as a functionally distinct role only as hierarchical depth increases, that mismatch detection initiates the triadic loop (C-first sequence), and that nested FSC layers produce qualitatively new cognitive capacities at each level. The second, developed in Two Origins of Hierarchy, argues that the hierarchy the FSC architecture operates within has radically different origins in morphogenesis and cognition: in morphogenesis, hierarchical constraint is phylogenetically inherited through evolutionary selection for bioelectric architectures encoding target morphologies; in cognition, hierarchical constraint is earned within a lifetime through FSC revision cycles that build the layers that will subsequently constrain future revision. This inherited/earned asymmetry generates differential predictions for intervention, a novel sequential prediction for aging (freeze precedes collapse), and a precise account of where subjective experience emerges within the FSC hierarchy. Together these accounts provide a unified framework spanning from bacterial adaptive agency to human consciousness, grounded in a single architectural motif operating across radically different substrates and timescales. Keywords: FSC architecture, hierarchical constraint, inherited hierarchy, earned hierarchy, morphogenesis, cognitive development, C-first sequence, FC-to-FSC development, aging, consciousness threshold, Reflective Humanism
