FSC in Biological Systems: A Universal Control Architecture Underlying Adaptive Life

This paper argues that the Founder-Supporter-Critic (FSC) triadic architecture, originally introduced in Reflective Humanism (RH) as a multilayer model of reflection in cognitive and social systems, is also present in minimal form within biological organisms at the earliest emergence of autonomous agency. Drawing on evidence from systems biology, chemotaxis research, homeostatic regulation, and origins-of-life theory, I propose that FSC is not merely a psychological abstraction but a general control motif evolution repeatedly converges upon. Version 2.0 extends the original paper with three significant additions. First, a developmental account of how the full triad emerges from a more primitive FC dyad: at the simplest biological scale, Founder and Critic are tightly coupled without a functionally distinct Supporter; the Supporter emerges as a separate architectural necessity as hierarchical depth increases. Second, a specification of the C-first sequence: within any reflective cycle, mismatch detection initiates the triadic loop rather than goal-generation, reversing the assumption that Founders trigger Critics. Third, an account of hierarchical learning and cognitive depth: each layer of FSC organization coordinates the competencies of layers below and affords new capacities to layers above, explaining why deeper hierarchies produce qualitatively different adaptive behavior rather than merely quantitatively more of the same. These additions integrate findings from recent work on multiscale cognition in cell and developmental biology and from the RH consciousness account, situating FSC as the biological precursor to subjective experience itself.
