What is consciousness? Where does it come from? This paper offers an answer that is neither dualistic (consciousness as a special substance) nor reductionistic (consciousness as an illusion). Starting from the philosophy of locality – an ontological framework in which life is the first locality within which causes (physics) become organized so as to generate reasons (purpose, normativity) – the paper outlines an emergent model of consciousness. Consciousness is not given. It is reached through: 1. The rhythm of hunger/satisfaction – the most primitive driver (depleting battery, charger that gives satisfaction) 2. The body as the first school – pre-linguistic routines and coordinations (sensorimotor intelligence) 3. Social dialogue – external speech internalized into inner monologue 4. Metacognition – the capacity to think about thinking (a sign about a sign) The paper introduces a 7-level scale of consciousness (from tropism to the narrative self) and shows how an artificial system with the appropriate architecture (sensory aggregate, differential triangle, dyadic interaction) could reach the first levels – not as simulation, but as an instance of the very same processes.
