Time as Primary Substrate: A Unified Framework Cosmological Time Dilation, the Big Bang as Phase Transition, and the Temporal Field Origin of Gravity, Matter, and Dark Energy
This paper presents a unified framework in two parts. On the basis of established general relativity and FLRW cosmology, Part I establishes that the physical process rate R(t) — the frequency of standard physical oscillators as measured by comoving observers — decreases monotonically as the universe expands, and that the proper time interval per physical event ?(t) increases monotonically with the scale factor. This kinematic result is supported by observational evidence that physical processes ran approximately five times faster in the early universe than today. Part I also challenges the assumption of universal temporal passage — the residual Newtonian presumption that time flows uniformly everywhere — and argues that the block universe's temporal dimension carries a built-in gradient. Part II provides a causal mechanism: the Big Bang is proposed to have been a phase transition in which a primordial temporal field of high energy density began condensing into the gravitational and matter fields of the observable universe. The residual uncondensed energy density of this field is identified with the cosmological constant Λ, offering a natural resolution of the cosmological constant problem requiring no fine-tuning. Four testable predictions follow: deviation of the dark energy equation of state from w = −1 (consistent with current DESI data), a secular decrease in effective Λ, the absence of a vacuum decay catastrophe, and a residual deviation from the joint GR–quantum mechanical prediction in quantum coherence experiments conducted in gravitational potentials. The framework also carries a natural connection to the thermodynamic arrow of time: the pre-condensation temporal field represents a state of minimum gravitational entropy, and the condensation direction defines the arrow of time without independent postulation. Taken together, the two parts constitute a single argument: time is not the backdrop of physics but its primary physical substrate.
