This paper develops a unified ontology of the ente, symbol, and legacy, arguing that the long‑term survival of civilizations depends on the preservation of symbolic responsibility rather than on external structures of authority. I show that external authority collapses when it attempts to replace or override the symbolic meaning generated by the ente, producing semantic drift, institutional fragility, and collective disorientation. Against this, I propose that the symbol is the primary unit of civilizational continuity: it stabilizes meaning, anchors identity, and enables the transmission of knowledge across generations. Responsibility emerges as the guardian of this symbolic order, ensuring that meaning remains coherent, truthful, and resistant to manipulation by political or institutional power. Legacy is then redefined not as memory or reputation, but as the sealed continuity of the ente’s symbolic actions across interior time. The paper concludes that civilizations endure only when symbolic responsibility is internalized by individuals and institutions, and that the collapse of external authority is ultimately a failure of symbolic stewardship rather than a failure of power. This framework provides a new metaphysical foundation for understanding collective survival in an age of accelerating technological and institutional instability.
