Non te egeo: When We Stopped Asking
This essay examines the contemporary erosion of the interrogative structure of subjectivity. It argues that questioning is not merely an epistemic instrument but an ontological posture: the active maintenance of openness through chosen incompleteness. Against this framework, contemporary algorithmic environments increasingly preempt the conditions under which genuine questioning arises by supplying anticipatory answers before existential lack can mature into inquiry. The essay introduces the concept of cognitive satiation to describe a condition in which subjects experience functional sufficiency while the interrogative faculty atrophies. It further distinguishes between two modes of separation from ultimate foundations: antagonistic rejection and practical indifference. The modern condition, it argues, is less accurately described by atheistic negation than by a quieter irrelevance toward transcendence (“non te egeo”). The essay concludes with a phenomenological reflection on prayer as a concentrated form of interrogative openness.
