The Walk Back to Eternity: The Causal Measure as an Overlay on Augustine's Confessions XI
This essay examines structural correspondences between Augustine of Hippo’s Confessions XI and The Causal Measure (Rich, 2026), a formal framework defined over finite directed acyclic graphs. Though separated by radically different methods, historical contexts, and aims, the two works converge on several analogous structures concerning time, causality, dependence, and transcendence. The essay compares Augustine’s account of temporal distention (distentio animi) with embedded causal perspective in finite systems, relates the nunc stans to the Measure’s notion of a Sovereign Source, and explores parallels between creation ex nihilo, causal conservation, and asymmetrical dependence. Rather than arguing for direct equivalence, the paper proposes that certain structural features of finite causal order become visible across both theological reflection and formal causal analysis. The result is presented as an exploratory overlay between patristic philosophy of time and contemporary formal metaphysical modeling.
